Where does the name D'arcspire come from?
As some kind of blessing - it's from Jeanne d'Arc: the Maid of Orleans. Her life was probably one of the most famous cases of horrific use of a justice system. She was vilified by a biased court that did all they could to denigrate her. She was a genius, a leader of men, and great military mind and possessed divine spirituality. And all this from a 14 year old girl. It wasn't until years later that she was accorded the respect she deserved. The 'spire' represents a place of worship...
How did the band get together?
It was a fairly simple process. Darryll, Dave and Lauren were in a Buckinghamshire band called Babycare that split up after a couple of chaotic years. Darryll and Dave began working together on new songs after quite a long break. A drummer and guitarist were recruited, and Lauren was asked to join. In November '04 Lauren left to pursue other ventures. Singer ads were placed... and Claudia was discovered.
What are your influences?
With it being 5 of us: quite diverse. We all like a bit of Metal from time to time, and all agree that Guns 'n' Roses are the metaphorical canine's genitalia. The classicism of Led Zeppelin is appealing, The Cure are up there for us, and none of us can agree on what the best Pink Floyd album is.
Are you religious?
We have a broad and holistic view on religion and spirituality. Four members of the band read tarot. Dave is more of a techie. He believes technology will get us there, rather than faith, so it probably protects us from coming across all hippy-dippy. And besides: we hate tie-dye.
Are you a Goth band?
No. We're a pop band. Or a hard rock band depending on how we feel on any given day, and how the mix turns out at a venue. Yes - we do have a penchant for a bit of leather, fishnet, PVC and heavy eye make-up, but then so does a dominatrix and she's not accused of being a Goth. (Neither are the girls in Chicago the musical).
How do you do your backing track live?
Up until recently we've had it running off an ibook running Logic. With the noisy drummer (see next question) we've found that this can be prone to crash - due to it being a little unstable, perched next to the drums, so we will be switching to using Minidisc. This is a little sturdier and much less of a liability live...
Can you turn the drummer down?
No. When he has a click track being nail-gunned into his ears at gigs it tends to make him play harder, and there's no way round that. Surely we can just turn everything else up. Can't we?
How should I endear myself to my favourite member of the band?
With Dikki - compliment his drumming, with Dave; talk about a new piece of technology, Claudia - offer her Orange Revels and/or Marzipan products, Darryll - buy him a dry white wine.
Who is Scarlett?
Scarlett is the most beautiful woman you have ever met. Scarlett is the most intelligent woman you have ever met. Scarlett is the most fantastic woman you've ever been to bed with, and even if you had her she would always be out of reach because she's not unhappy, she just feels that there is something missing from the world and maybe she should maybe actually be someone else.
How many Scarlett songs are there and why?
3 Scarlett songs have been written so far: 'Can I Call you...', 'Wearing Scarlett Out', and 'N=N*fpnef1fifcfL' (an equation to work out if there is life on other planets). Your unlikely to hear the later for a while as it's in waltz time and features a tuba.
Why are there so many deaths in the D'arcspire songs?
Because stuff happens. There are great stories from tragedy, it's a full stop on a life and you can look at it in it's entirety and see what you can learn from it. The Greeks gave us tragedies to learn from and the 'Hollywood Ending' has been killing this idea off. And Nick Cave made a damn good living out of it didn't he?
What is the argument over Lust and Malice about?
It's full title is Lust and Malice (Arms Out and Sigh) and people always abbreviate it. Things like that get on Darryll's nerves, whilst he is very aware that long titled songs about lesbian supermodel cokeheads can be a bit of a mouthful. (Pun intended).
